Reconstructionist Judaism
Jewish Reconstructionist Federation
Founded in 1955, the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation is the rapidly
growing synagogue arm of the Reconstructionist movement, serving more than
100 congregations and havurot spread across North America.
Who is a Reconstructionist Jew?
A Reconstructionist Jew has strong commitments both to tradition and
to the search for contemporary meaning. Reconstructionists encourage
all Jews to enhance their own lives by reclaiming our shared heritage
and becoming active participants in the building of the Jewish future.
Is Reconstructionist Judaism for you?
Reconstructionist Judaism is a progressive, contemporary approach to Jewish
life which integrates a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the
insights and ideas of contemporary social, intellectual and spiritual life.
Peoplehood Reconsidered
In this article, Rabbi Toba Spitzer talks about how Mordecai Kaplan says that Jewish people need community
because the group has a creative energy that gives life to our values and
ideals. But, says Rabbi Spitzer, you can’t tell people to “belong” when they don’t feel a sense
of connection any more than you can tell them to “believe” in something that
is alien to their experience.
